Help! I’m a new teacher

Share

Congratulations on becoming a teacher.

It is a truly rewarding profession.

Please remember, the first time you try anything new, it will be challenging (teaching included). Do your best to ALWAYS remain positive.  Classroom management is essential to having a manageable classroom that is conducive to learning and safe. Here are some tips to help you:

Learn everyone’s name within the first few hours.

Have a treasure chest for the students who are on task (it also gives the other students an incentive to be on task)

Have clear classroom rules (have them come up with the rules and you can tweak them)

Make your behavioral expectations clear (in plain, simple language)

This should be number 1, POSITIVELY REINFORCE ALL GOOD BEHAVIOR

As visual aids, display: students of the week, classroom rules, your expectations and other aids to make the classroom friendly and inviting.

Unstructured time can be the most challenging times. Prepare some activity for EVERY minute of the day. Every minute needs to be accounted for (even recess, you should have options for them to choose from).

BREATH. Take time for yourself to take deep breaths.

As best as possible, avoid taking work home.

Hope that helps.

All the best,
Jordan Jean-Jacques
